What did we find out?

Learner’s Book 1: Unit 7, pp. 107–109
GoalDescribe what a Venn diagram shows by counting, comparing and talking about the data.
New words
describe · tell what you seecompare · say which is more or fewerI like · a label for things you like
Explanation

A Venn diagram can show what people like. Sara puts foods she likes inside her circle and foods she does not like outside. We describe what we find out. We count the foods inside and the foods outside. We say which has more and which has fewer. We can also talk with a partner. Which foods did you both like? Which were different? Talking about data helps us to think.

Worked examples
Look at the picture. Sara likes plums, bread and carrots. She does not like beans or cheese. Inside there are 3 foods and outside there are 2. 3 is more than 2.

Ten crayons are called A to J. The blue crayons are A, F and H. There are 3 blue crayons and 7 crayons that are not blue. 3 + 7 = 10. There are fewer blue crayons than crayons that are not blue.
To discuss: Ali and Sara both like plums. That is the same. Ali likes cheese but Sara does not. That is different.
Class activity

Food circle: draw a circle labelled ‘I like’. Draw or write 5 foods: put foods you like inside and others outside. Show a partner and compare. What did you both like? What was different? Count the foods inside and outside.
