Sort and count

Learner’s Book 1: Unit 7, pp. 103–105
GoalSort things into a Venn diagram using letters, then count what is inside and outside.
New words
letter · a name like A or B for each thingnot · does not matchcount · say how many
Explanation

Sometimes each thing has a letter. We write the letter in the diagram instead of drawing the thing. Look at eight buttons called A to H. Some have 2 holes and some do not. The buttons with 2 holes go inside the circle. The other buttons go outside. Then we count the letters inside and the letters outside. Add the two numbers to check that you have all of the buttons.

2 holesA D FB C E G H
Worked examples
Buttons A, D and F have 2 holes. They go inside the circle. Buttons B, C, E, G and H do not have 2 holes, so they go outside.
+
Inside the circle there are 3 buttons. Outside there are 5. There are 8 buttons altogether: 3 + 5 = 8.
3 is fewer than 5. So there are fewer buttons with 2 holes than buttons without 2 holes.
Class activity

Letter cards: write letters A to H on 8 small pieces of paper, one on each. Put a different toy or object on each letter. Choose a label like ‘toys that are soft’. Put the letters inside or outside a circle. Count both places.

Practice
1
Six cups are called A to F. Cups A, C, D and F have a handle. How many cups are inside the circle ‘has a handle’?

2
Look at the circle in task 1 again. How many cups are outside the circle?
3
In task 1, are there more cups inside or outside the circle?
4
How many cups are there altogether?
