Find the mistake
Learner’s Book 1: Unit 7, pp. 106–107
GoalCheck a Venn diagram, find things that are in the wrong place, and sort the same group in two different ways.
New words
mistake · something that is not correctcheck · look again to see if it is rightwrong place · not where it should be
Explanation
Always check your Venn diagram. Look at each thing and ask, does it match the label? If it does not match but it is inside the circle, that is a mistake. If it matches but it is outside the circle, that is also a mistake. A group can be sorted in more than one way. We can sort some clothes by where we wear them, and then sort the same clothes in another way. The circle changes when the label changes.
Worked examples
Look at the picture. The label says has fur. A frog has no fur, so it is in the wrong place. A mouse has fur, so it should be inside. There are 2 mistakes.
Six clothes: a hat, a sock, a glove, a scarf, a shoe and a boot. Sort by worn on your feet: the sock, the shoe and the boot are inside. The hat, the glove and the scarf are outside.
Sort the same six clothes by comes in pairs: the sock, the glove, the shoe and the boot are inside. The hat and the scarf are outside.
Class activity
Mistake spotter: draw a Venn circle with 3 things inside and 2 outside. Put one thing in the wrong place on purpose. Ask a family member to find your mistake and explain why it is wrong.
Practice
1
Which thing is in the wrong place?
the leaf (it is green, not red)
2
Which thing is in the wrong place?
the sock (we cannot eat it)
3
Name one more thing that goes inside ‘can be eaten’.
for example a banana, rice, a carrot or cheese
4
A circle is labelled ‘worn on your feet’. Where does a hat go?
outside (we wear a hat on our head)
