Properties of metals
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Mg + CuSO₄, Fe + Pb(NO₃)₂, Ag + CuSO₄ — which occur? Write equations for those that do.
Mg + CuSO₄ → MgSO₄ + Cu; Fe + Pb(NO₃)₂ → Fe(NO₃)₂ + Pb; Ag + CuSO₄ does not occur (silver is less active than copper).
2
How many grams of hydrogen are released when 130 g Zn reacts with dilute HCl? (A(Zn) = 65)

3
Why are silver and copper used for electric wires, and why mostly copper?
They conduct current very well; copper is much cheaper than silver.
4
In Fe – 2e⁻ → Fe²⁺, is iron oxidised or reduced? Why?
Oxidised: it gives up electrons and its oxidation state rises from 0 to +2.
5
Explain in two sentences how the metallic bond differs from the covalent bond.
In a covalent bond the electron pairs lie between two atoms; in the metallic bond the valence electrons are shared by the whole crystal.
