Working with pictures in documents
Pictures and photographs make a document clear and attractive. Put the cursor where the picture should go, then choose the Pictures button on the Insert tab. A picture can come from three sources: a file on the computer or a flash drive (“This Device”), the program’s ready-made collection (Stock Images), or the internet (Online Pictures). Note: the old “Clip Art” collection of Word 2010 no longer exists in current versions. When you click a picture a frame with handles appears: drag a corner handle to enlarge or shrink it without distorting it; a side handle stretches it in one direction only. A Picture Format tab appears with groups for correcting colour and brightness, picture styles, arranging and size. The Wrap Text button decides how the picture sits relative to the text: in line with text, around a frame or outline, top and bottom, behind the text or in front of it. “In line with text” makes the picture behave like one big letter on the line; with the other options you can drag it anywhere on the page. When you take pictures from the internet respect copyright: choose pictures marked as free to use (for example Creative Commons), name the source, and never post another person’s photo without their permission.
“Picture placement” contest: groups place a picture in a text in four different wrap styles and write the name of each style beside it.
