Formatting a document
Changing text decoration such as typeface, size, colour, paragraph alignment, borders and background is called formatting the document. To format a font you first select a block, then pick a button in the Font group of the Home tab, or open the Font dialog with the corner button (or Ctrl+D). There you choose typeface, style, size, colour, underline type and colour and effects (strikethrough, superscript, subscript); on the Advanced tab you set scale (character width in per cent), spacing (gap between characters) and position (raised or lowered relative to the line). Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I and Ctrl+U give bold, italic and underline. To format a paragraph it is enough to put the cursor inside it; then use the Paragraph group or dialog to set alignment, left and right indent, first-line indent, space before and after and line spacing. Page numbers are added with the Page Number button on the Insert tab, usually at the bottom of the page.
“Decoration workshop”: pairs format the same plain text in opposite styles (official and festive) and the class discusses which look suits which document.
