Operations on tables
A finished table often needs changes. To add a new row or column, put the cursor in a cell next to where it should go and, in the Rows & Columns group of the Layout tab, choose Insert Above, Insert Below, Insert Left or Insert Right. To delete an extra row or column, put the cursor in it (select them if there are several) and choose Delete Rows or Delete Columns from the Delete list; the ordinary Delete key only erases the text inside the cell. To merge cells, select a rectangular block of cells and press Merge Cells; this is handy for a table title spanning several columns. To split one cell, put the cursor in it, press Split Cells and enter the number of columns and rows to create. Text in a cell can run horizontally or vertically (top to bottom or bottom to top); press the Text Direction button several times or choose it from the right-click menu. To select a row or column with the mouse, click at its left edge or on the arrow above it.
“Table repairers”: the teacher gives a badly built table (an extra column, an unmerged heading) and groups repair it in 5 minutes.
