Text editors
Textbook: pp. 4–7
GoalLearn a little history of writing, what a text editor is, and name its main parts and functions.
New words
text editor · matn muharririwork area (the “page” where you type) · ish sohasicursor (shows where the next character will appear) · yurgichmenu (a set of commands) · menyu
Explanation
People first stored information as pictures on cave walls, then wrote on skins, papyrus and paper; the tools changed but the idea of writing did not. Fixing a mistake in handwriting is hard, but a computer makes it easy. A text editor is a program for typing, saving, changing and printing text. Its window has three main parts: the work area (the “page” you type on), the cursor (a thin line showing where the next character will appear) and the menu bar (a set of commands). Every editor can create a new file, open a file, save, save under another name or in another folder, print, and edit text. The simple editor that comes with Windows is Notepad; it saves plain text only.
Worked examples
Open Notepad and type “Salom, maktab” (Hello, school). The cursor moves one character to the right after each letter. Choosing Save from the File menu writes the text to the disk as a file.
Compare a text editor with a text processor: in Notepad one font applies to the whole text and you cannot insert pictures; in Word each word can have its own colour and size, and you can add pictures and tables.
Class activity
“Find the parts” game: the teacher shows the Notepad window on the projector and pupils take turns pointing at the work area, the cursor and the menu bar.
Practice
1
Name the three main parts of a text editor.
The work area, the cursor and the menu bar.
2
What does the cursor show?
Where on the work area the next typed character will appear.
3
Why is typing on a computer more convenient than handwriting for text you will change many times?
Because you can delete and fix a mistake, move words and print again quickly, without rewriting everything.
4
What is the “Save” command in an editor menu for?
To write the text to the computer’s storage as a file so it is not lost.
