Practice: editing and formatting

Textbook: pp. 40–41
GoalCarry out the whole process of making a document (plan, type, edit, format, save) and check one’s own work.
New words
plan (an outline made before writing) · rejachecking / proofreading · tekshirishdraft · qoralamacopy (backup version) · nusxa
Explanation

Making a good document is done in stages. First you make a plan, writing down what each paragraph will be about. Then you type the text and save the document at once under a meaningful name. The third stage is editing: mistakes are corrected, extra sentences deleted and words replaced. The fourth stage is formatting: the title is emphasised, font and paragraph settings are chosen, and page colour, border and numbers added. At the end you reread and check the document, save with Ctrl+S and, if needed, make a backup copy with Save as…. Order matters: content first, decoration second, otherwise you must fix the formatting again after every edit. Recall the rules: new paragraph – Enter; end of line – End, start – Home; select all – Ctrl+A; bold – Ctrl+B. In this lesson you turn the documents from earlier lessons into finished work.

Worked examples
A plan for “Mening do‘stlarim” (My friends): 1) who my friend is; 2) where they study; 3) interests; 4) dream; 5) why we are friends. Each item is one paragraph.
Checklist: Is the title centred? Is the font 12–14 pt? Are all words spelled correctly? Is there a page number? Has the document been saved?
Class activity

“Document workshop”: each pupil gives a document to a neighbour to assess against the checklist and receives two suggestions.

Practice
1
Put the stages in the right order: formatting, plan, editing, typing.
2
Which key moves to the end of the current line: Home or End?
3
Why is it easier to edit first and format afterwards?
4
How many items can the plan of a five-paragraph text have?
