Practical lesson: pictures and drawings

Textbook: p. 54
GoalCreate meaningful drawings (a flag, a wall of a computer room) with shapes, colour, arranging and grouping, and make different looks by changing picture format.

Explanation

In this lesson you practise what the last two lessons taught. First plan what to draw and break it into simple shapes. The flag of Uzbekistan has three horizontal stripes: sky-blue at the top, white in the middle and green at the bottom; thin red lines separate the stripes, and the blue stripe carries a crescent and 12 stars. To draw it you take three equal rectangles, two thin rectangles (the red lines) and star and moon shapes; colours are chosen with Shape Fill and the outline is removed if needed. Repeated shapes (for example the stars) are drawn once and copied with Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. The stacking order of shapes is changed with the Bring Forward / Send Backward buttons in the Arrange group. Landscape is handy for wide drawings: Layout > Orientation > Landscape. When the drawing is ready, grouping makes it easy to resize and move as one.

Worked examples
Flag: stack 3 rectangles (blue, white, green); between them put 2 very thin red rectangles. Select all with Shift and group.
Wall of a computer room: a window (rectangle + 4 small rectangles), a desk (a long rectangle), a monitor (rectangle + stand). Draw it on a landscape page.
Class activity

“Class gallery”: finished drawings are shown on the screen; pupils name two good points and one suggestion for each.

Practice
1
In what order are the flag’s stripes (top to bottom)?
2
How many stars are beside the crescent on the flag?
3
If one shape covers another in a drawing, how do you change the order?
4
Why is a landscape page better for a wide drawing?
