Ecological factors

Textbook: pp. 80–83
GoalDistinguish abiotic, biotic and anthropogenic factors, name the parts of a biocenosis (producer, consumer, decomposer) and build a food chain.
New words

Explanation

Outside factors that act on a living organism are called ecological factors. They are of three kinds: abiotic factors are factors of non-living nature (light, moisture, temperature); biotic factors are the effects of living organisms on each other (for example plant-eater and plant, predator and prey); anthropogenic factors are the effects of human activity (hunting, felling forests, creating new varieties and breeds). The environment an organism is adapted to and breeds well in is its habitat: a fish’s streamlined shape and slimy covering help it overcome water resistance, and a reptile’s horny scales help it keep water in the desert. The interaction of living and non-living nature makes a natural community; its living part is the biocenosis. In a biocenosis producers (green plants) make organic matter; consumers (plant-eating and predatory animals) feed on ready-made organic matter; reducers (bacteria and fungi) break organic matter down to mineral substances. Organisms that eat the one before them and are food for the next form a food chain. It starts with a producer plant. For example: grass → hare → wolf; dead organisms are broken down by reducers. If one link of the chain is broken, the other links suffer too.

Worked examples
Lake chain: alga → small fish → predatory fish → stork. The alga is a producer; the others are consumers; bacteria and fungi (reducers) break down their dead remains.
If a lake dries up in summer and algae decrease, small fish decrease, then predatory fish and storks too: when the first link is lost, all the rest suffer.
Class activity

“Food web” game: each pupil takes a card with one organism (wheat, mouse, grasshopper, sparrow, snake, eagle, fungus). Connect who eats whom with string. Then remove one link (for example the grasshopper) and discuss which organisms suffer. Safety: never wrap the string around anyone’s neck, and play seated in class; in nature do not hunt animals or disturb their dens.

Practice
1
Name the three kinds of ecological factor and give an example of each.
2
In the chain grass → grasshopper → lizard → snake, point out the producer and consumers.
3
What are reducers and what do they do?
4
Why does a food chain always begin with a green plant?
