Explanation

Biology is the science of life. The name comes from the Greek words “bios” (life) and “logos” (science, teaching). Biology is divided into branches by what they study: botany studies plants, zoology animals, mycology fungi, microbiology tiny living things, and cytology the cell. Anatomy studies the inner structure of an organism, physiology the processes that go on inside it, systematics the grouping of organisms by shared features, genetics heredity and variation, and ecology how organisms relate to one another and to their surroundings. Biological knowledge helps farmers get good harvests and healthy livestock, helps doctors treat illness, and helps people use nature wisely. Uzbek scientists have contributed too: Academician Y. X. To‘raqulov worked out how adding iodine to table salt prevents goitre, and Academician J. A. Musayev created a collection of cotton varieties.

Worked examples
A gardener who knows how an apple tree is built and when it needs water gets a bigger harvest. This knowledge belongs to botany.
Zoology answers questions about how a swallow flies or where a tiger lives; ecology studies the link between an earthworm in the soil and a plant root.
Class activity

“Branches of biology” game: the class splits into ten groups, each given one branch (for example, botany). A group invents one question that branch could study and writes it on the board; the others guess the branch. Safety: the game is played seated, with notebooks only.

Practice
1
Which words does “biology” come from and what do they mean?
2
What do these sciences study: mycology, cytology, genetics?
3
A scientist is working out which group a newly found beetle species belongs to. Which branch of biology is this?
4
Why do farmers and herders need biological knowledge?
