A walk in space
Textbook: Part 1, pp. 72–78
GoalFind facts in an informational text; learn about the life of astronauts.
New words
astronaut · fazogirweightlessness · vaznsizlikspacesuit · skafandrouter space · koinot
Explanation
The textbook has the text “Fazoga sayr” (A walk in space) by Sally Ride, an American astronaut, the first American woman to fly into space. It explains how an astronaut prepares to work in space. We do not retell it; we read our own text. An informational text is not fiction; it gives facts and exact information. To answer a question we search for a key word in the text and read the answer from that place.
Worked examples
“An astronaut’s day”. On a space station everything floats weightless. So astronauts tie themselves into a special bag when they sleep. Food and drinks come in tightly closed containers. They exercise for hours every day so their muscles and bones do not weaken. For going outside a special spacesuit is worn: it supplies air and water and protects from great heat or cold. Astronauts go outside always in pairs.
Facts: weightlessness; a bag for sleeping; daily exercise; the suit provides air; they go out in pairs.
Class activity
“Fact or opinion?”: the teacher reads sentences; children stand for a fact and sit for an opinion.
