Explanation

The textbook has the story “Bir hovli qush” (A yard full of birds), Part 1, by Muhabbat Hamidova, about a boy who attracts birds to the yard in winter. We do not retell it; we read our own text. In a story the description of nature gives the events a mood: cold air, deep snow, birds’ voices. In winter it is hard for birds to find food, so they can be given grain. Salty or mouldy food must not be given, because it harms them.

Worked examples
“Winter grain”. In the morning our yard was covered with snow, the air cold and silent. In an old dish by the window I put a handful of millet and sunflower seeds. First one sparrow landed carefully, then two more flew in. They began to peck hurriedly while I stood quietly and watched. Grandmother said: “Grain given to birds brings great reward.” I promised to fill the feeder every day.
Description: a snow-covered yard, cold and silent air. Help: millet, sunflower seeds; no salty food.
