Explanation
A car’s wheel needs an axle to turn. The axle joins the wheel to the body. We make the body from a small card box, the wheels from plastic caps and the axle from a straw and a stick. The stick turns inside the straw. An adult makes the holes in the centre of the caps.
Worked examples
A card box + 4 caps + 2 axles = a toy car.
Class activity
You need: a small card box, 4 plastic caps, 2 straws, 2 round wooden sticks (blunt ends), glue, paints. Steps: 1) An adult makes holes in the centres of the caps. 2) Glue the straws under the box, parallel to each other. 3) Push a stick through each straw and press a cap onto each end. 4) Paint the box and draw windows and lights. Safety: making holes and any sharp tools are for adults only; keep the stick ends smooth.
