A mandarin tree (from waste material)
Textbook pp. 28–29
GoalMake a mandarin tree using waste items.
New words
mandarin (tangerine) · mandarintrunk · tanacrown · shox-shabbafruit · meva
Explanation
The mandarin is an evergreen citrus plant. It grows in warm, damp places and starts to bear fruit after about five years. The fruits are orange and the leaves are glossy green. We make the fruits from plastic caps or scrunched paper, so used things turn into decorations again.
Worked examples
A brown cardboard trunk + a green crown + 6 orange caps = a mandarin tree.
Class activity
You need: card, green paper, orange plastic caps or orange paper, glue, scissors. Steps: 1) Cut a trunk from card and glue it upright to a card base. 2) Cut a big cloud-shaped crown from green paper. 3) Fix the crown to the trunk. 4) Wrap the caps in orange paper (or paint them) and glue them on as fruit. Safety: caps must be clean and unbroken; never put small items in your mouth.
