The “Solar System” project

Textbook pp. 46–47
GoalBuild a model of the Solar System from a diagram.
New words
the Sun · Quyoshplanet · sayyoraorbit · orbitamodel · maket
Explanation

The Solar System has the Sun and the planets that move around it. There are eight planets in this order from the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. The biggest planet is Jupiter and the smallest is Mercury. Saturn has beautiful rings. Pluto is now called a dwarf planet. In the model we keep the order and the relative sizes right.

Worked examples
Earth is the third planet from the Sun. Mars is the fourth.
Class activity

You need: a big black or dark blue card, coloured paper, scissors, glue, felt-tip pen, a compass or round lid (for circles). Steps: 1) Glue a big yellow Sun on the left of the card. 2) Cut the planets from coloured circles: Jupiter biggest, Mercury smallest, Earth medium. 3) Place them in order starting from the Sun. 4) Draw the orbits with light arcs and write the names. Safety: a compass tip is sharp, so use it only with permission and care.

Practice
1
How many planets are in the Solar System?
2
Which is the third planet from the Sun?
3
Which is the biggest planet?
