GoalReview Unit 6 “Familiar and unfamiliar substances”: atmosphere, air, fire, water and water sources.
New words

Explanation

The atmosphere consists of gases needed by living things. Air is part of non-living nature and life on our planet depends on clean air. Fire needs fuel, oxygen and heat to burn; destructive fire is dangerous to people, plants and animals. All living things contain water and cannot live without it. Water is always circulating: the Sun heats water, it evaporates and forms clouds, rain or snow falls from clouds and water returns to rivers and seas.

Worked examples
Water → vapour → cloud → rain → river → sea → vapour again.
Places with clean air usually have many trees.
Class activity

Mini-project “The journey of water”: on a big sheet draw the Sun, sea, cloud, mountain and river and show the water cycle with arrows. Beside each arrow write the process: evaporation, condensation, rain/snow, flow. Optionally, watch droplets form on the lid of a container of warm water. Safety: use only warm water.

Practice
1
State the stages of the water cycle.
2
Why do we need air and water?
3
Name the 3 sides of the burning triangle.
