Explanation
Earth is the only planet in the Solar System known to have life. Geography studies the Earth. Earth’s surface is water and land, with more water. There are six continents. Space holds billions of stars and galaxies. Astronomy is the science of heavenly bodies. The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite. Artificial satellites help people with communication, finding their way and knowing the weather.
Worked examples
Earth is in the Solar System; the Solar System is in the Milky Way galaxy.
Antarctica is the coldest continent; Eurasia the biggest.
Class activity
Mini-project “Space poster”: on a large sheet draw the Sun and the 8 planets in order (roughly by size), mark Earth with a red circle and draw the Moon beside it. Write the planets’ names and order. Groups present their posters.
Practice
1
How does Earth differ from other planets?
it has life
2
Order Earth, the Solar System and the galaxy from smallest to biggest.
Earth → Solar System → Milky Way galaxy
3
Name 2 uses of artificial satellites.
For example: communication, weather forecasts, navigation
