Explanation
A person is part of nature. The science of plants is botany; the plant world is flora. Plants are wild or cultivated; cultivated ones divide into vegetables, fruit, cereals and ornamentals. Zoology studies animals; the animal world is called fauna. Animals can be predators or herbivores, wild or domestic. Ecology studies how living things relate to each other and to their surroundings.
Worked examples
Apple: flora; wolf: fauna; both are living nature.
Building a bird feeder is an ecologically good deed.
Class activity
Mini-project “Nature dictionary”: make 6 cards: botany, flora, zoology, fauna, ecology, living nature. Each has the word, its meaning and a picture. Quiz each other in pairs: “What is flora?”
