Carrying a word to the next line
Textbook Part 1, pp. 64–65
GoalCarry a word from one line to the next correctly, by syllables.
New words
line · satrcarrying over · ko‘chirishhyphen (-) · chiziqcha (-)
Explanation
If a word does not fit on the line, we carry part of it to the next line by syllables and put a hyphen at the end of the line: mak- / tab. A single vowel is never left alone on a line or carried alone. So ona (mother), uzum (grapes) and o‘rik (apricot) are not split. A one-syllable word is never split either.
Worked examples
qa- / lam (pencil); kabu- / tar or ka- / butar (pigeon)
o-na has 2 syllables but is not carried over (o would stand alone)
Class activity
Children write words on narrow paper strips; when a word doesn’t fit they carry it over with a hyphen. Partners check each other.
