Splitting words into syllables
Textbook Part 1, pp. 62–63
GoalSplit words into syllables correctly.
New words
splitting · ajratishhyphen · chiziqchacounting · sanash
Explanation
First find the vowels, then split the word. If one consonant stands between two vowels, it goes to the next syllable: ki-tob (book), o‘-rik (apricot). If two consonants stand there, they are shared between the syllables: mak-tab (school), daf-tar (notebook).
Worked examples
ov-qat (food), pi-choq (knife), o‘-rik (apricot): 2 syllables
pi-yo-la (bowl), meh-ri-bon (kind), ta-la-ba (student): 3 syllables
Class activity
“Syllable train”: one syllable goes in each wagon. Children place a word into wagons: mak | tab, pi | yo | la.
