Numbers 1 to 5: whole and parts
Textbook Part 1, pp. 40–41
GoalSplit a whole into parts and find a whole from its parts.
New words
whole · butunpart · qismpart + part = whole · qism + qism = butun
Explanation
5 balloons are the whole. We split them by colour into parts: 3 red and 2 blue. Adding the parts gives the whole: 3 + 2 = 5. Taking one part away from the whole leaves the other part: 5 − 3 = 2.
Worked examples
🔺🔺🔺🔵 — whole 4; parts: 3 triangles and 1 circle. 3 + 1 = 4, 4 − 1 = 3, 4 − 3 = 1.
There were 5 balloons and 2 flew away: 5 − 2 = 3 left.
Class activity
Children split 5 blocks into two colour parts and write 4 number sentences for one picture (two additions, two subtractions).
