Explanation

To find how much bigger one number is than another, subtract the smaller from the larger. “How many more?” and “how many fewer?” are answered the same way: larger − smaller.

Worked examples
1A drew 8 pictures and 1B drew 6. Total: 8 + 6 = 14. Difference: 8 − 6 = 2 — 1A drew 2 more.
Lola cut 7 ribbons and Komila 9: 9 − 7 = 2 — Komila cut 2 more.
Class activity

Two children hold buttons. They pair them up — the unpaired ones show the difference. Then they check it with subtraction.
