Explanation
A problem solved with one operation is a simple (one-step) problem. For “How many more are needed?” we subtract what we have from what we need. Write the answer as a full sentence: “58 more books must be brought.”
Worked examples
30 of 88 new textbooks have arrived. Still needed: 88 − 30 = 58.
36 pupils are going on a trip; 24 sets of parents have paid: 36 − 24 = 12 still need to pay.
Class activity
“Post boxes”: envelopes show expressions and boxes show answers. Children “post” each envelope in the right box.
