Explanation
To solve a word problem: 1) read it carefully; 2) find what is known and what is asked; 3) choose the operation (joining → add; taking away or finding a difference → subtract); 4) calculate and write the answer.
Worked examples
An orchard has 34 apple trees and 25 apricot trees. In all: 34 + 25 = 59 trees.
48 people were at the stop and 23 got on the bus: 48 − 23 = 25 people are left.
Class activity
“Problem workshop”: each pair writes one addition and one subtraction problem and swaps with another pair to solve.
