Storage through time and our canteen plan

Discover P3 Term 1: Axis 1, Chapter 3
GoalOrder ways of keeping food through time on a timeline, and plan one element of a healthy canteen.
New words
timeline · a line that shows events in the order they happenedpreserve · to keep food good to eat for longerdesign plan · a drawing and list that show how we will build something
Explanation

People have always needed ways to keep food from spoiling. A timeline puts them in order. A very long time ago, people used fire to cook food. Later they dried food in the sun, and people in many places, including Egypt, dried and salted fish and meat. About two hundred years ago, glass jars with tight lids were used to keep food. About one hundred years ago, the electric refrigerator came to homes. On a timeline, the earliest event is on the left and the newest is on the right. Now our class can plan its canteen. Each team plans one element, such as a cold storage corner, a handwashing station, a menu board, seats or bins. Each team explains how its element supports healthy living, shows a design plan, and says how it works with the other teams.

Worked examples

Reading the timeline. Which came first, drying in the sun or the electric fridge? Drying in the sun came much earlier. Which is newest? The electric fridge.

Wash Stationtap and soapclean hands
Team Cold Corner plans a shady corner with a box lined with cloth for yoghurt, water from a tap, and a sign: “Keep the lid closed”. How it supports healthy living: cold food stays good to eat.
tapsoapbintowels
Team Wash Station checks their work: Is the tap close to the food counter? Is there a bin for paper towels? The team has 4 members and presents for 2 minutes, which is 120 seconds, so each member speaks for 30 seconds: 4 × 30 = 120.
Class activity

Our canteen plan. Make a timeline with four cards in the correct order (fire to cook, drying and salting, glass jars, electric fridge). Then, in a team, choose one canteen element. Draw a design plan with labels, write how it helps healthy living, and practise a two-minute presentation. Say how it works with the other teams’ elements.

Practice
1
Which is newer: glass jars or the electric refrigerator?
2
Put these in order from oldest to newest: electric fridge, drying in the sun, glass jars.
3
Name one element a healthy canteen needs and how it helps.
4
A team has 4 members and a presentation of 2 minutes. How many seconds can each member talk?
