A canteen for our school

Discover P3 Term 1: Axis 1, Chapter 3
GoalDescribe a healthy canteen space, list canteen foods, and sort food cards into groups chosen by the class.
New words
canteen · a place at school where children can buy snacks and mealshealthy space · a clean, safe place that helps people feel wellgroup · things that go together because they are alikeallergy · when a food makes some people ill, so they must not eat it
Explanation

Imagine our school gets a canteen. What would make it a healthy space? It must be clean. There should be a tap and soap so children can wash their hands, bins for rubbish, shade and seats, and clear signs. It also needs healthy food and drinks, with water always available. Each child can write a list of three foods to sell, for example a banana, a cheese sandwich and a glass of milk. Then the class sorts the food cards into groups. The class decides the groups, for example “fruit and vegetables”, “bread and rice” or “eat often” and “only sometimes”. Some children have allergies to foods such as nuts, eggs or milk, so the canteen must label every food clearly and teachers must know about allergies.

Hana’s list of three canteen foods: an apple, a cheese sandwich, a glass of milk. She also writes: “Please label foods with nuts or eggs.”
plant foodsanimal foods
The class sorts 8 food cards in one way: plant foods or animal foods. Plant foods: bread, banana, rice, tomato. Animal foods: egg, cheese, chicken, milk. 4 + 4 = 8.
eat oftenonly sometimes
Another class sorts the same cards differently: “eat often” and “only sometimes”. There is more than one right way to sort, as long as the group name tells why the foods belong together.
Class activity

Design our canteen. In a group, draw a plan with a tap and soap, bins, seats and a food counter. Each child writes three foods on cards. A grown-up checks whether anyone in class has an allergy and the group adds labels. Then sort all the cards into groups of your own choice and write a name for each group.
