Explanation

When you were a baby you could not walk, talk or feed yourself. Since then your body has grown and you have learned many skills. Learning needs time, trying and practice, and mistakes are part of it. A timeline puts changes in order, from the earliest to the latest. Mariam’s timeline shows four changes in what she can do, at ages 1, 3, 5 and 7. Everybody grows and changes, but not at the same age: one child rides a bike at 6, another at 8, and both are doing well. When we compare two timelines, we look for something that is the same and something that is different. Knowing how much we have changed helps us guess how much more we can learn.

Same and different. Youssef and Salma compare timelines. Same: both walked at age 1. Different: Youssef rode a bike alone at 6 and Salma at 8. The gap is 8 − 6 = 2 years. Salma is not “late”: she learned at her own time.
Learning has steps. Omar learned to swim in four steps, and each step needed practice.
Class activity

My timeline. Cut a paper strip 16 cm long. Mark a point every 2 cm and write the ages 0 to 8 under the marks. Draw four things you learned to do and glue each at the right age. Then visit three classmates and look at their timelines. For each one write one thing that is the same and one thing that is different in a table with the columns “Friend”, “Same” and “Different”. Listen kindly: there is no best timeline.
