Reading a food label

Discover P3 Term 1: Axis 1, Chapter 3
GoalRead a food label: serving size, calories, nutrients to limit and nutrients to get enough of, and what % Daily Value means.
New words
serving size · the amount of food the label’s numbers are aboutcalories · a measure of the energy in food% Daily Value · how much of a day’s amount of a nutrient one serving giveslabel · the information printed on a food package
Explanation

A food package has a label with facts. First, look at it like a scientist: What do I see? What do I think? What do I wonder? Then read the nutrition facts in steps. Step 1: the serving size. The numbers are for one serving, so if you eat two servings, double them. Step 2: calories, which tell how much energy is in one serving. We do not need to count them; we use them to compare foods. Step 3: the % Daily Value. A guide says 5% or less is low, and 20% or more is high. Step 4: look for nutrients to limit, such as sugar and salt, which should be low, and nutrients to get enough of, such as fibre, which should be higher.

Worked examples
seethinkwonder
See–think–wonder. Omar looks at the cracker label. I see: numbers for 30 g and a fibre line. I think: this is about one serving. I wonder: how many crackers are 30 g?

Serving size. The fruit biscuit label has 14 g of sugar per serving. Farida eats 3 servings: 14 + 14 + 14 = 42 g of sugar. More servings means more sugar.
% Daily ValueIt is…
5% or lesslow
20% or morehigh
Reading the % Daily Value. On the cracker label, sugar is 4%: that is low (5% or less). Fibre is 20%: that is high, which is good for a nutrient to get enough of.
Class activity

Label detective. Bring an empty clean food package from home (no need to buy anything). Look at the label with a grown-up. Write what you see, think and wonder. Find the serving size, the sugar and the fibre. Is the sugar % low, medium or high? Do not use the packages as food.
