Skin, our shield

Discover P3 Term 1: Axis 1, Chapter 2
GoalSay how skin protects the body, how we look after it, and test sunscreen on paper with a grown-up.
New words
organ · a part of the body with a special job, such as the skin, heart or stomachskin · the body’s outer cover; it is the biggest organgerms · very tiny living things that can make us illsunscreen · a cream that helps protect skin from the Sun’s rays
Explanation

Your body is made of parts called organs, and each organ has a job. Your skin covers your whole body and is the biggest organ. Skin is like a shield. It keeps out germs, protects us from the Sun’s rays, keeps the water inside our body, and helps keep our temperature steady. Skin has layers, and our body keeps making new skin all the time, so a small scrape heals. The Sun’s rays can hurt skin. The best protection is to stay in the shade and cover up with a hat and light clothes. Sunscreen helps too. Wash your hands with soap, and tell a grown-up if you have a cut. Two bodies are alike in many ways, with skin, bones and a heart, but they are also different, for example in height and skin colour.

Worked examples
HabibaMostafa
Habiba and her cousin Mostafa stand side by side. Both have two arms, two legs, a heart, bones and skin, so they are alike. Mostafa is taller and Habiba has longer hair, so they are different.
clean and coversoap
Omar scrapes his knee. His skin keeps germs out, and new skin grows. His mum washes it with clean water, and he tells his teacher. Skin protects us, and we protect our skin.
Half of the paperPrediction

No sunscreenfades
A sunscreen test on paper (a grown-up helps). Dark paper is folded in half. A grown-up rubs a very small amount of sunscreen on one half. The paper rests on a table in the daylight for the day, and we never look at the Sun. We predict: the half with sunscreen will stay darker.
Class activity

Sunscreen test, with a grown-up. Use dark paper, folded in half. A grown-up spreads a tiny dab of sunscreen over one half only. Leave the paper in daylight on a table or windowsill for a day. Never look at the Sun. Write your prediction first, then compare the two halves. Wash hands after touching sunscreen. What happened to the half with no sunscreen?
