Water on our planet
Water is very important. We drink it, cook with it, wash with it and use it to grow crops. Plants and animals need water to live. On a globe you can see that about three quarters of the Earth is covered by water. We can show this as 3 out of 4 equal parts of a circle. Most of this water is salt water in the seas and oceans, and we cannot drink it. Only a small part is fresh water. Some fresh water is frozen as ice near the poles, so even less is easy for people to use. In Egypt the Nile is the main source of fresh water. Because the water we can use is so small, we must conserve it. At home we can close the tap while we brush our teeth, tell a grown-up about a dripping tap so it can be fixed, and use a bucket instead of a hose. Every little saving helps.
| Way | How it saves water |
|---|---|
| close the tap while brushing | the water stays in the pipe |
| fix a dripping tap | stops slow waste |
| use a bucket, not a hose | uses only what is needed |
Water in the world. Draw a circle, divide it into 4 equal parts and colour 3 parts blue. Write: “About three quarters of the Earth is covered by water, and most of it is salty.” Next, use the word WATER: for each letter, W, A, T, E and R, write one way water is important to us. Last, make your own plan with three ways to save water at home, and tick one each day this week.
