Explanation
A car needs fuel and our body needs food as fuel. Food gives us energy because of nutrients. Digestion begins in the mouth. Your teeth chew food into small pieces, and saliva makes it soft. Next you swallow, and muscles around a food tube squeeze the food along until it reaches the stomach. The stomach is a muscle bag that squeezes and mixes the food with a stomach juice for a few hours. Then the food moves to the intestines, which are long tubes. There, the nutrients pass into the blood, and the blood carries them to every part of the body. What is left leaves the body as waste.
Worked examples
mouth→food tube→stomach→intestines
Mina eats a piece of flatbread. Her teeth chew it, then she swallows, the stomach squeezes it, and the nutrients pass into her blood in the intestines.
The model stomach, with a grown-up. A cracker is broken into a few pieces and put in a strong zip bag with a little lemon juice. The bag is sealed. Squeezing the bag is like the stomach muscles. The cracker turns soft and mushy. The bag is never opened, and nobody tastes or smells it.
Why do we chew well? Smaller pieces are easier for the stomach to mix and digest. Habiba chews each bite slowly.
Class activity
Model stomach, with a grown-up. First ask: is anyone allergic to the cracker? If so, do not touch it. A grown-up helps put the cracker pieces and a little lemon juice into a strong zip bag and seals it. Squeeze the bag for two minutes. Draw the cracker before and after. Never open the bag, never taste or smell it. Wash your hands afterwards.
