Adverts: attention or facts?

Discover P3 Term 1: Axis 1, Chapter 1
GoalTell which parts of an advert win attention and which parts give facts, and plan a short advert.
New words
advert · a short message that tries to make people want to buy somethingattention · when people look and listen to somethinginformation · true facts, such as size, what it is made of and how much it costsfeedback · kind words that tell a friend what was good and what could be better
Explanation

An advert is made to make us want something. Adverts use tricks to win our attention: cheerful music, bright colours, a cartoon character, or a sentence like “Everybody has one!” These make us look, but they do not tell us if the thing is good. Other parts give information: the size, what it is made of, how long it lasts and the price. Before we ask a grown-up to buy something, we should look for the facts and ask, “Do I really need it?” When we plan our own advert, we choose a name, a way to win attention and some true facts. Then a friend gives feedback: one thing that was good and one thing to improve.

Class activity

Plan an advert with a partner for an invented product, such as a pencil case. Write: the name, one way to win attention, and two true facts. Show it to another pair. They say one good thing and one thing to improve. Do not use real brands.
