Which way? The Sun and directions
Discover Term 2: Axis 3, Chapter 2
GoalSay the four directions and where the Sun is in the morning, at midday and in the evening.
New words
direction · the way we face or gocompass · a tool that shows north, south, east and west
Explanation
There are four main directions: north, south, east and west. A compass shows them. The Sun helps us too. In the morning the Sun comes up in the east. At midday it is high in the sky. In the evening it goes down in the west. The Sun seems to move across the sky. It is really our Earth that turns. Never look straight at the Sun, because it can hurt your eyes.
Worked examples
Every morning Mariam sees the Sun rise from her balcony. It rises in the east.
A compass has a needle that points north. With it we can find the other directions.
In the evening the Sun goes down in the west. Seif sees the sky turn orange.
Class activity
Sun watch: with a grown-up, find out where the Sun comes up from your home. Stand facing the side where the Sun rises: that is east. Then your back is to the west. Say the four directions. Do it again in the evening. Never look at the Sun.
