Next to, above, below, between

Learner’s Book 1: Unit 16, pp. 234–236
GoalUse the words next to, above, below and between to say where something is.
New words
above · higher than something elsebelow · lower than something elsebetween · in the middle of two things
Explanation

We use position words to say where things are. Above means higher up. Below means lower down. Next to means right beside something. Between means in the middle of two things. Look at the toy shelf. The doll is next to the ball. The doll is between the ball and the drum. The doll is above the teddy, so the teddy is below the doll. Check each word carefully, one at a time.

Worked examples
Look at the shelf again. The teddy is between the car and the kite. The car is below the ball. The kite is next to the teddy.
pearapplelemon
figplumgrape
In this grid the apple is between the pear and the lemon. The plum is below the apple, and the fig is next to the plum.
A cup is next to a plate on the table. The jug is above them, on a shelf. A mat is below them, on the floor.
Class activity

Shelf game: put 6 toys or kitchen things on two shelves or in two rows on a table, 3 on top and 3 below. Say a clue like ‘it is below the cup and next to the spoon’. Your partner points to the thing. Then swap and let your partner give the clues.
