Ten more, ten fewer
Learner’s Book 1: Unit 9, pp. 135–136
GoalFind 10 more and 10 fewer than a number to 20.
New words
ten more · count on 10 from the numberten fewer · count back 10 from the numbernumber track · numbers in order in boxes, 1 to 20
Explanation
Look at the number track from 1 to 20. It has two rows of ten. A number in the top row and the number just below it are 10 apart. So the number below is ten more, and the number above is ten fewer. 4 is in the top row. Ten more than 4 is 14. 17 is in the bottom row. Ten fewer than 17 is 7. Look at the ones: 4 and 14 both end in 4.
Worked examples
Ten more than 6 is 16. Go down one row from 6.
Ten fewer than 18 is 8. Go up one row from 18.
Ten more than 10 is 20. Ten fewer than 10 is 0.
Class activity
Number track game: write 1 to 20 on 20 paper squares and lay them in two rows of 10. Roll a dice and add 4 (so you get 5 to 10). Stand on that number. Then step to the number that is ten more.
