Two more, two fewer

Learner’s Book 1: Unit 9, pp. 134–135
GoalFind 2 more and 2 fewer than a number to 20 by counting on and back.
New words
two more · count on 2 from the numbertwo fewer · count back 2 from the numbernumber line · a line with numbers in order, to help us jump
Explanation

Two more means count on 2. Two fewer means count back 2. Start at 9. Count on: 10, 11. So 2 more than 9 is 11. Count back: 8, 7. So 2 fewer than 9 is 7. On a number line we jump right to count on and left to count back. A jump of 2 on the number line is the same as counting in twos.

Socks come in pairs. How many socks are in 7 pairs? Make 7 jumps of 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14. There are 14 socks.
Class activity

Floor number line: use chalk or tape to make a line with numbers 0 to 20 on the floor. Stand on a number. Your partner says ‘two more’ or ‘two fewer’ and you jump to the right place. Say the new number out loud.
