Take 10 pegs or spoons. Make pairs. Is 10 odd or even? Now take away one and make pairs again. Is 9 odd or even?
10 is even (5 pairs). 9 is odd (4 pairs and 1 left over).

Count all the shoes in your home in twos. Does each person have an even number of shoes?
The total is even because shoes come in pairs. The child should count 2, 4, 6, …

Copy the number track 1 to 20 on paper and colour all the even numbers.
The even numbers are 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.

Jump in twos from 0 to 20 across the floor. How many jumps did you make?
10 jumps: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.

Pick a number from 1 to 10 and say ten more. Pick a number from 11 to 20 and say ten fewer. Do this 3 times each.
For example 3 gives 13 and 17 gives 7. Check the ones digit stays the same.
