Explanation

To ask the number: “How many books are there?” Answer: “There are ten books.” For many we say “there are”; for one we say “there’s one”. The counted thing is plural: books, chairs, lamps. If there is one: “There’s one book.”

Worked examples
— How many chairs are there? — There are four chairs.
— How many lamps are there? — There’s one lamp.
Class activity

“Counting”: children count 3 kinds of objects in the classroom and say “There are twelve desks.” The fastest group wins.
