Explanation

For one thing: “What’s this?” — “It’s a ruler.” For many things: “What are these?” — “They’re books.” For more than one we add -s: book — books, pencil — pencils. “It’s” is for one thing, “They’re” for many.

Worked examples
— What’s this? — It’s a red bag.
— What are these? — They’re two pencils.
Class activity

“Mystery bag”: put classroom objects in a bag. A child feels one or more objects and asks “What’s this?” or “What are these?”, and the class answers.
