The letter pairs ng, sh, ch

Textbook Part 1, pp. 46–49
GoalKnow that the letter pairs sh, ch and ng each stand for one sound.
New words
letter pair · harf birikmasish · shch · chng · ng
Explanation

Sh, ch and ng are written with two letters but stand for one sound. Don’t confuse ng with n and g that just happen to be next to each other: in ko‘ngil (heart) ng is one sound.

Worked examples
sh: shamol (wind), qush (bird), shaftoli (peach)
ch: choy (tea), chumoli (ant), qaychi (scissors); ng: tong (dawn), dengiz (sea), rang (colour)
Class activity

“Count the sounds”: children clap to check that qush has 4 letters but only 3 sounds.

Practice
1
How many sounds in choy (tea)?
2
Say a word ending in ng.
3
Shaftoli starts with which letter pair?
