Addition
Textbook Part 1, pp. 24–25
GoalUnderstand joining two groups as addition; read the “+” and “=” signs.
New words
addition · qo‘shishplus (+) · plyus (+)sum · yig‘indiequals (=) · teng (=)
Explanation
When we join two groups into one, we add. Girls and boys together make “children”. In maths we write 4 + 2 = 6 and read it “four plus two equals six”. The result is called the sum.
Worked examples
3 apples and 2 more apples: 3 + 2 = 5.
There were 2 birds in a tree and 1 more flew in: 2 + 1 = 3.
Class activity
Two children come to the board, then one more joins. The class says the number sentence: “2 + 1 = 3”.
