How many more? Stars
Textbook Part 3, pp. 38–39
GoalTell apart “... more than”, “... fewer than” and “how many fewer?” problems.
New words
constellation · yulduz turkumibright · yorqinin the middle · o‘rtasida
Explanation
There are three kinds of question: 1) “8 more than 7” — 7 + 8 = 15; 2) “9 fewer than 16” — 16 − 9 = 7; 3) “How much less is 70 than 85?” — 85 − 70 = 15. In the third we find a difference, not a new number.
Worked examples
The best-known part of the Great Bear, the “Big Dipper”, is made of 7 bright stars.
9 lies halfway between 6 and 12: 3 more than 6 and 3 less than 12.
Class activity
Children draw their own “constellation” (5–15 stars) on dark paper, then compare with a partner and write a “how many more” problem.
