Why we need water
Discover P3 Term 1: Axis 1, Chapter 3
GoalExplain why the body needs water, what happens when we lose too much, and track my cups of water.
New words
hydrated · having enough water in the bodydehydrated · not having enough water in the bodythirsty · feeling that you need a drinkjoint · a place where two bones meet
Explanation
If you forget to water a plant, its leaves droop. People need water too, but we cannot see it as easily. Your body is mostly water. Water keeps your temperature steady, helps your joints move, cushions your bones, and helps carry waste out of your body. Every day you lose water when you sweat, when you go to the toilet and even when you breathe. You need to drink to replace it. If you do not drink enough, you may feel thirsty, tired, dizzy or get a headache. Tell a grown-up if you feel this. Water is the best drink for staying hydrated; milk is good too. Very sweet drinks are only for sometimes. On hot days and after playing, you need more cups of water than usual. A water tracker helps: colour one cup for each cup you drink.
Water helps…
keep body temperature steady
joints move
cushion the bones
carry waste out of the body
Worked examples
A plant that is not watered droops. When Seif’s mum waters it, the leaves stand up again. Our bodies also need water to work well.
Jana plays football in the afternoon and sweats. She loses water, so she drinks a cup of water when she stops and again at home.
Karim’s water tracker for five school days. Sunday 6 cups, Monday 7, Tuesday 5, Wednesday 8, Thursday 6. Wednesday was a hot day, so he drank the most.
Class activity
Water tracker and poster. For five days, draw a row of cups each day and colour one cup each time you drink water. Count your cups. Then make a poster that teaches other children why water matters: a title, one fact and a picture. Choose one idea and practise telling it to your class.
Practice
1
Name two jobs of water in the body.
For example: keeps temperature steady, helps joints move, cushions bones, carries waste out.
2
In the tracker, which day had the fewest cups?
Sunday, with 5 cups.
3
In the same tracker, how many cups in all?
7 + 5 + 6 + 8 = 26 cups.
4
Name two signs that you may need a drink.
Feeling thirsty, tired, dizzy or having a headache.
