Explanation
Labels help us choose. To compare three cereals, we look at the same serving size and then at the same rows. The cereal with a lot of sugar is not the best choice for every day. The cereal with more fibre and less sugar is a better choice. Fibre helps the digestive system. We also check salt. We can say: “I choose Cereal C because it has the least sugar and the most fibre.” That is evidence. A good scientist uses numbers from the label, not just the colourful picture on the box. To rank, put the cereals in order, for example from the most sugar to the least sugar: A (12 g), B (7 g), C (3 g). Remember that we use labels to compare, not to feel bad about what we eat.

Worked examples
Ranking by sugar from most to least: Cereal A has 12 g, Cereal B has 7 g, Cereal C has 3 g. 12 − 3 = 9, so A has 9 g more sugar than C.
Fibre, from least to most: A (1 g), B (3 g), C (6 g). Habiba says: “C has the most fibre.” Her friend says: “And C has the least salt.”
The choice with evidence: “Cereal C is the best choice because it has the least sugar (3 g), the most fibre (6 g) and the least salt (90 mg).” Cereal A is the least healthy choice for every day because it has the most sugar.
Class activity
Cereal detective. With a grown-up, read the table of the three cereals. Rank them for sugar and for fibre. Write your choice and two pieces of evidence. Then ask a partner to choose too. Do you both choose the same one? Why?
Practice
1
Which cereal has the most sugar?
Cereal A, with 12 g.
2
Which cereal has the most fibre, and how many grams?
Cereal C, with 6 g.
3
How much more sugar does Cereal B have than Cereal C?
7 − 3 = 4 g more.
4
Why is “it has a nice picture on the box” not good evidence?
A picture does not tell us what is in the food. Numbers on the label do.
