Place names and their spelling
Names given to a particular geographic area are place names: continents, countries, cities, villages, regions, districts, neighbourhoods. When the name of a country or territory consists of two or more words, each word is capitalized: Janubiy Koreya (South Korea), Amerika Qo‘shma Shtatlari (United States), O‘zbekiston Respublikasi, Markaziy Osiyo (Central Asia). The words viloyat (region), tuman (district), shahar (city) are lowercase: Toshkent viloyati, Samarqand shahri. Compound place names are mostly written joined: Surxondaryo, Buloqboshi, To‘rtko‘l, Oqtepa. Place names containing bo‘yi, orti, oldi are also joined: Orolbo‘yi (Aral Sea area), Kaspiyorti (Caspian area).
