Once a week, twice a month: time expressions
Time expressions tell us how often. Every day means seven days a week. Once means one time and twice means two times. After three, we say three times, four times and so on. We say once a week, twice a month and three times a year. These phrases usually go at the end of the sentence: I visit my grandmother twice a month. Sham El-Nessim comes once a year in spring. Many families have two big Eid holidays each year. To ask, we say: How often do you visit your cousins?
| Expression | How many times | Example |
|---|---|---|
| every day | 7 times a week | I brush my teeth every day. |
| once a week | 1 time a week | We have a swimming lesson once a week. |
| twice a month | 2 times a month | He visits his aunt twice a month. |
| three times a year | 3 times a year | I go to the beach three times a year. |
I love sport. I play football with my friends twice a week, on Sundays and Wednesdays. I swim once a month in the club pool. My cousin Seif lives in Luxor, so I visit him only twice a year. I always take a small gift. I would like to see him more often.
How often do you go to the beach, Adel?
Three times a year, in the summer holiday.
I go only once a year. We all go to Alexandria together.
That sounds lovely!

Calendar count. Look at a calendar with the child. Choose three things you do, for example swimming, visiting a cousin and going to the shop. Count how many times you do each one in a week or a month and say: We go to the shop twice a week.
