Explanation

The Unit 12 fiction reader is the book’s own story, so it is not told again here. Read the title page and the picture dictionary on page 88 and the story on pages 90 to 95 with a grown-up, and look carefully at the words. In this lesson we learn the words with our own examples. A carpenter makes things from wood, such as tables and doors. A yard is the ground next to a house, where a carpenter can keep wood. An order can be a request: a shop gets an order for twenty chairs. It can also be an instruction: the captain gave an order. A dovecote is a small house for doves or pigeons, and doves coo. A dome is a round roof; many old and new buildings have one. You may know the dome of a mosque. Use these words in our own story next.

Look at the pictures. Say the words that have a picture: tree, door and bird.
Read the picture dictionary on page 88 of your book. Choose two words and tell a grown-up what they mean.
Now you. Say a sentence with carpenter and a sentence with yard.
Class activity

Word cards. The child writes the six words on cards with the meaning on the back and a small drawing where possible. A grown-up says a meaning and the child shows the right card. Then the child writes three sentences with three different words.
