Explanation
A museum keeps artifacts. An artifact is an object that people made long ago, such as a jar, a ring or a statue. We say what it is made of: It is made of clay. They are made of gold. Some materials are durable: granite is a hard stone, and it can last for thousands of years. Other materials, such as cloth, wear out more easily, so a museum keeps them safe in a case to preserve them. Look at the table: it shows five materials and one artifact for each.

Guide
No, it is made of clay. It is a very old jar.
Mostafa
And this big block?
Guide
It is made of granite. Granite is hard and durable, so it can last for thousands of years.
Habiba
Why is the cloth in a glass case?
Guide
Cloth is not as durable, so we preserve it in a case. It is fascinating, isn’t it?
Listen. Mostafa and Habiba visit a museum with a guide.
Look. Say the things and the materials.
Read the museum guide’s answers on page 4 of your book. Find two materials and say what they are used for. Do not copy the sentences.

Class activity
Museum at home. The grown-up puts six household objects on a table (a glass, a spoon, a shirt, a clay cup, a coin, a key). The child is the museum guide: This is a spoon. It is made of metal. It is durable. Then the child makes a sign for each object.
